One quote to rule them all, and in the darkness guide them!
I often joke about there being a ‘Lord of the Rings’ line or quote to fit every situation in life.
Well, I would I’m a ‘Lord of the Rings’ fan! In saying that there is depth to some of the lines and quotes from the film or book whether from Gandalf, Bilbo Baggins, Frodo, or Sam or any of the other characters.
“It is the same with my word. I send it out, and it always produces fruit. It will accomplish all I want it to, and it will prosper everywhere I send it.” (Isaiah 55:11)
I particularly like Samwise Gamgee’s speech – worth fighting for. When life feels tough and we don’t feel like carrying on – maybe I don’t feel like going to Church or I see the news and get down hearted about this dark world, it's ok, as Sam says: “…there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for”. When I wonder what difference I make in this world, Gandalf’s words of wisdom help – “It is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.”
And I can’t help quoting Bilbo Baggins when I feel wearisome - “I feel thin, sort of stretched, like butter scraped over too much bread.” And I know at times what Bilbo means when he said – “I want to see mountains, Gandalf”. I love mountains and see God in mountains – his power, his awesomeness and seeing mountains brings peace, freedom, and joy to my heart.
I know I’m not the only one who reuses lines from films in everyday life and not the only one who has felt that a particular film or book could provide guidance in most, if not all areas of our lives. But I know where we can find an answer, a quote, a line for every situation in life and that’s – The Bible.
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
